HOW FORGIVENESS AFFECTS MENTAL HEALTH

As the popular adage says,” to err is human, to forgive is divine”, Forgiveness is a virtue that needs to be taken seriously, even though it is overlooked by most people.

Research has shown that forgiveness is linked to mental health outcomes such as reduced anxiety, depression, and major psychiatric disorders, as well as fewer physical health symptoms and lower mortality rates.

Whether you’ve suffered a minor slight or a major grievance, learning to forgive those who hurt you can significantly improve both your psychological well-being and physical health.

Many people think of forgiveness as letting go or moving on. But there’s more to it than that. True forgiveness goes a step further, offering something positive—empathy, compassion, understanding—towards the person who hurt you.

Despite the proven benefits of moving on, forgiveness can be a hard concept for some people to embrace. It can feel unfair to have to put in the effort to forgive when the other person was the one in the wrong, but that’s life.

The Importance of Forgiveness

    • Forgiveness can even lead to feelings of understanding, empathy, and compassion for the one who hurt you.
    • Forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting or excusing the harm done to you or making up with the person who caused the harm.
  • Forgiveness brings a kind of peace that helps you go on with life.
  • Learning to forgive is a superpower. It helps us move forward in life instead of looking back at the past.
  • Forgiveness is mainly for your benefit, not for the benefit of the person you are forgiving. As long as you are feeling like a victim, you are carrying a heavy burden. Forgiveness allows you to put the burden down and simply walk away from it for free.
  • Forgiving helps us grow. Once you have forgiven anyone in your life you feel has harmed you, you suddenly find you have more time for thinking good, productive, and useful happy thoughts instead of negative self-centered complaining.

Your mental health must come first before anything else, and hence practicing forgiveness daily ensures you have peace of mind, inner peace, and the ability to think freely without any hindrances. Practice forgiveness, whether you are wrong or not, and whether the other person involved deserves your forgiveness or not, and notice how mentally healthy you eventually become.

If you don’t practice forgiveness, you might be the one who pays the most dearly. By embracing forgiveness, you can also embrace peace, hope, gratitude, and joy. Consider how forgiveness can lead you down the path of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
